CONFERENCE ELEMENTS:
International Biofuels Conferences
The International Biofuels Conferences in Tocantins in 2009 and Maranhao in 2010 are meant to provide a framework for looking a biofuels production in achieving optimum sustainability while also addressing industry barriers to expansion due to lack of vertical integration, predictable feedstock costs and some way to manage risks of sustained drops in petroleum costs. This will focus on specific technical solutions to improving sustainability through higher yield, utilization of biomass from land use for fuel or energy production, new low carbon fertilizers and various strategies to improve energy and environmental impacts. The Conferences will aim to attract biofuel and feedstock producers and address their issues with planting and production while also addressing market shifts, business opportunities, technology and other factors that could influence growth of the biofuels industry on a global scale. The primary objective of holding two conferences on the edge of the Amazon is to explore the potential to put together a major multi-state trading program for carbon credits while also promoting the concept of using expansion of biofuels production to make up for lost economic activities from stopping ranching, charcoal production and logging. This will be discussed in terms of specific initiatives and policies discussed at the conference to reach consensus on a feasible plan. The other objective is to introduce technologies and concepts in workshops in 2009 and invite the same or other speakers to discuss progress, science of carbon life cycle science, application of technologies in real projects and discussion of various polity options during and between conferences to arrive at a conherent biofuels and sustainability policy. The other objective is to highlight what the industry is working on to achieve sustainable biofuels production while biofuel & fuel markets grapple with adoption of low carbon fuel regulations in the USA & Europe and define how to implement sustainability in the trading of biofuels, carbon credits or in controls on carbon emissions in the transport & other sectors.
