Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil

Sao Luis is the main port city for Northeast Brazil, with the deepest and largest volume port in the whole country.  Sao Luis is also the oldest city in Brazil and is full of quaint old buildings and a multi-cultural heritage.  Sao Luis was originally settled by the Dutch who were pushed out by the French who were finally pushed out by the Portuguese and the city is now truly Brazilian in its own unique way.  It is home to peoples of all races, colors, backgrounds and upbringing that share a special view of life that is the heart of Brazil.  This includes a very famous Carnaval full of dancing and music, many other festivals and a friendly open outreach to visitors.  The beaches are world famous and include lots of chances to dine and watch the sunset, swim, surf, kite surf, play soccer or other games of life.  Exploration opportunities include trips to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach and tidal backwater in the world (Lencois), trips by boat up the Amazon, road trips into the interior, and ferry excursions to nearby islands.  More important to biofuel companies are the endless opportunities associated with the development of vertically integrated businesses including low cost land, excellent logistics, year round growing season, plenty of water and lots of agricultural land that is underutilized.   At the same time, there is an excellent protection system for the Amazon lands, that allows visitors to understand efforts to balance development and sustainability.

Brasilia, Federal District, Brazil

Brasilia is the Capital of Brazil and has a skyline that combines unique Federal buildings and a booming commercial center.  The buildings in the Capital have very distinct designs that incorporate modern architecture and a latin tropical feel.  More important than the buildings is the changing political and environmental landscape in Brazil as it takes on a leadership position in the production of sustainable biofuels.  The government is in the middle of developing policy to addresses the various economic, social and environmental issues with sustainability so a truly progressive strategy can be put in place.
